  • History: SE88P-03 was sold from the Spice factory to Ball Bros. Racing. The car initially ran in the Camel Lights/GTP Series of 1988, achieving a best place finish of 4th overall in the 3hr San Antonio race on 4th September of that year and 6th overall in the classic 500kms at Watkins Glen on 3rd July 1988 In 1989 Ball Bros again raced the car and in February competed in The Daytona 24hr race. Piloted by Steve Durst and Mike Brockman the car completed 426 laps and was in 12th place when a broken differential bought an end to the proceedings. Ball Bros campaigned in two more races that year before the car was taken on by Pierre Alain Lombard (Essex Racing). In 1990 the car under Essex Racing competed again at the Daytona 24hr with Charlie Morgan, Henk ten Cate and Tom Hessert taking the wheel. They completed 440 laps before succumbing to an electrical fault – they were running 7th in the Lights class at the time. Three weeks later the car was back on track at the GP Miami race and finished a credible 4th in the lights Class (9th overall) just 5 laps behind the winning Nissan GTP ZX-T. The final race of the campaign for the car was at the Sebring 12hr on 17th March 1990. The car was again run by Hessert and Morgan and finished a fantastic 7th overall and a 1st in class from 49 starters. “….. all in all the Spice car was a real race car. It did everything it was supposed to do and the complete car really worked. The car was considered a ground effects car and it was the best car I had ever driven even to today. But very hot inside. I met Gordon Spice many a time and had a great casual relationship with him. He was a great guy and Jeff Hazel was his right hand man.” For 1991 and 1992 the car was run by Carlos Bobeda in IMSA GTP Lights. It was run with a long tail engine cover in 1992 which I have as a spare. The car was then sold to a Swedish racer, Kari Makinen, who ran the car in Interseries. He took a 4th in class at the 1995 Interseries race at Donnington. In 1995 he entered the car in the Swedish REAB Sportscar Cup, winning 1 of the 6 rounds and finishing 3rd in the championship. However better was to come and in 1996 he won 3 of the 6 races and with that took the championship for that year. The car was then stored in Makinen’s showroom until being traced by Robin Ward of Damax. In 2008 the car was purchased by Robin Ward for Chris Catt and Mike Furness to race in the Historic Group C championship. For 2 years it was prepared for them to race by Robin. In 2009 the car was purchased by the current owner Nick Chester. Ownership record: 1988-1990 Ball Brothers Racing, 1990-1992 Essex Racing, 1992-1995 Carlos Bobeda, 1995-2008 Kari Makinen, 2008-2009 Chris Catt / Mike Furness, 2009-2013 Nick Chester Notable Group C championship results include: Chris Catt 2008 Le Mans 1st in Class,Robin Ward 2009 Spa 1st in Class, Nick Chester 2010 Nurburgring 2nd Overall, Nick Chester 2011 Spa 4th Overall, Nick Chester 2012 Silverstone 3rd in Class
